Happy New Year! We are excited to see all of the students after our two week break and are currently moving into the last month of semester one. Senior High students will be preparing for finals and our Junior High are set to write mid-term exams. Report cards will be arriving home at the beginning of February!
As you are aware, we continue to promote and develop our Good to Great philosophy. The purpose is to engage students to achieve their personal best in academic studies. We constantly research, read, listen, and seek feedback from parents, teachers and students to consider new strategies that might contribute to student success. As part of the next phase of this program we are modifying our Student Owned Electronic Device Policy. With this, we will be endeavouring to eliminate devices that reduce the effectiveness of the classroom learning environment.
Starting January 7, 2019, the only electronic devices that will be utilized in the classroom will be Chromebooks or Laptops. All other devices brought to class, will be checked in with the teacher as the students enter the classroom. This will eliminate the use of these devices during instructional time while still providing access to all necessary online resources and tools. All devices that have been checked in at the beginning of the class will be returned to the students as they leave. We believe that this procedure will enhance the learning in the classroom and give the students the opportunity to access their devices when they are not in class.
Any students found to be using their devices during instructional time will have the device stored at the main office until the end of the day. Students will be able to pick them up from admin prior to leaving for the day. We understand that this may be a difficult transition for both students and staff, and you can help by supporting this change. Our conversations with students prior to the break will make the change a bit easier we hope. Please talk with your child about the real life workplace application of this change. Most workplaces do not allow employees to use their devices to take pictures, text, or engage in social media during work hours as it distracts from the effectiveness in the workplace.
Please note that this change will apply to all staff as well.
If you have any comments, questions, or concerns about this or any other matter that affects your child’s learning, please contact me at the school, or set up a meeting to come and meet with me.
