Semester 2 Schedule

Semester 2 Time Table

10 January, 2020

Dear Parents and Students,

We are happy to inform you that we have completed the Semester 2 Schedule.  This past week school staff met to discuss the logistics of our options classes and other schedules that may have been affected by the changes.  This letter is for the purpose of giving parents and students our final schedule for semester 2. We thank everyone for their input and dialogue in this process and are optimistic that the new schedule will address the most pressing needs presented to us by the school community while respecting traditions and programming that we already had in place.  From the Staff and Parent meetings, we have incorporated many of the ideas presented and have implemented these to make our schedule stronger for students at Alix MAC School.

The schedule addresses the following:

  1. Increased class time for academic classes in High School. With 80 minute classes for Sr. High Core Classes like Math, English, Social Studies, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics; students have extra time each day for instructions and questions from their teacher in the subject area. Direct teacher instruction was one of the most important values presented to us.
  2. High School Core Courses are now scheduled as much as possible in the morning to allow for RAP, Dual Credit, or Work Experience students to leave the school for off-campus learning opportunities in the afternoons.
  3. The creation of a common reading time for every student in the school with opportunities for Home Room Room Teachers to connect with students at the beginning of each day.
  4. Increase in the lunch hour to allow each staff member the proper amount of time for lunch as required by contractual obligations.  This time also allows for more extra-curricular opportunities to be run in the school day.
  5. Introduction of the “Flex Friday” during the Options block which will allow for a variety of student activities, clubs, and opportunities to be run during the school day.
  6. In maintaining school traditions we have kept the focus on fine arts. As we ensured Art and Band continued to be offered to all students in Jr. and Sr. High.  In addition, we are hoping to strengthen the Elementary Band Program through the inclusion of Grade 5 Students next semester.
  7. We will be sending and emailing an option form with students next week.  This form will explain the process and structure for options and thus will be required to have a parent signature upon handing back in.

Finally, for Grade Four parents, because of the FTE allocations of our current staff, Mrs. Shapka will be teaching Grade 4 from 2:02-3:10 each day because of a part-time contract designation for Mrs. Swainston. We appreciate Mrs. Swainston’s extra effort and dedication to our students during the first semester.

Sincerely,  Boyd Davies and Adrian Paolinelli- Alix MAC Administration Team.
